Concept
Modern systems are largely organized around utility. Efficiency, performance, scalability, and measurable output define success in engineering, economics, and management. This paradigm has produced remarkable achievements.
Yet utility alone cannot guarantee viability.
A system may be highly optimized and still collapse if it loses coherence with its environment or internal structure. Living systems do not maximize performance; they preserve relational balance. What matters is not only what works, but what continues to make sense within changing conditions.
Utility answers: What does this do?
Sense asks: Why does this matter here and now?
Utility operates locally and instrumentally. Sense operates relationally and contextually. When detached from sense, optimization becomes blind—leading to ecological fragility, institutional burnout, and systemic instability.
Sense does not replace utility; it orients it.
At the M3 level, systems stabilize functional forms.
At M4, these forms are evaluated within a broader horizon of meaning.
The difference is subtle – but decisive.
