Concept
In the late twentieth century, John Archibald Wheeler proposed a provocative idea: It from Bit. Every physical entity – the “it” – may ultimately arise from informational distinction – the “bit.”
Traditionally, matter was considered primary, and information secondary – a description of what already exists. Wheeler inverted this logic. What becomes real is what can be distinguished, registered, or answered by a yes/no question. A bit is not simply data; it is an act of differentiation.
This does not imply that reality depends on human observers. It suggests that distinction itself is fundamental. Measurement is not passive detection but participatory articulation.
Developments in quantum theory, holography, and informational physics increasingly explore how geometry, fields, and particles might emerge from underlying informational correlations. Space may reflect relational structure rather than pre-existing container.
In this perspective, persistence is not material substance alone, but stabilized informational coherence.
Reality may not be made of information. It may appear through information.
