The new paradigm of Complexity Science applied in Research and Education

Who We Are

The Center for Complexity Studies (CCS), a non-profit, non-governmental organisation created in 1996, is one of the first Romanian think tanks aiming to promote the new paradigm of Complexity to the people at large.

Our values: The Compass for meaningful decisions

The beliefs and values we cherish shape our work, reflecting what matters most

Knowledge Enhances Competitive Dynamics While Encouraging Responsibility

As someone who has viewed Earth from space, I have profoundly understood the interconnectedness and fragility of the world we live in. In such a world, simple and linear approaches are no longer sufficient. We need a new paradigm, one that reflects the complexity of our reality and helps us navigate the profound transformations of the present.

The Center for Complexity Studies brings exactly this type of vision. By leveraging the paradigm of complexity as a conceptual resource for research and development, the Center opens innovative pathways for the sustainable evolution of society. From clean technologies and new materials to the intelligent transfer of knowledge between academia and the socio-economic environment, the Center’s activity represents an essential bridge to the future.

I am honored to support this initiative and to encourage the adoption of complexity as the foundation of an economy based on knowledge, creativity, and ethical responsibility.

General Dr. Dumitru Prunariu - Cosmonaut

I have had the privilege of accompanying the Center for Complexity Studies since 2001, participating as a lecturer in various events and activities. During this time, I have personally discovered a completely new universe, fundamentally different from what traditional education offers. The Center’s summer camps provided me with an extraordinary opportunity to meet enthusiastic young people thirsty for authentic and profound knowledge—a kind of knowledge capable of opening new perspectives on the world.

These young people view reality through the lens of complexity and are driven by the desire to explore and constantly challenge knowledge. I have particularly admired their bold spirit and their ability to build authentic, almost familial relationships, united by a common ideal: to advance together and contribute, through the power of knowledge, to the evolution of humanity as a whole.

The founders, members, and participants in CCS’s activities undoubtedly convey a message that seems to come from the future, helping us better anticipate a world that may appear to flow smoothly for some but seems chaotic for most.

The Center The Center for Complexity Studies is a counsellor for the Romanian society and not only. Since its establishment in 1996, the Center for Complex Studies (CCS) can be likened to a dyad, that is, a relationship between two entities defined by their interaction. Within this perspective, one can identify the relationship between ideas and actions in general, or between the academic and entrepreneurial environments in particular. Ideas rooted in the philosophy of complexity science generate principles, values, theories, methods, models, or paradigms, while actions reflect the application, knowledge production, and implementation of the complexity paradigm through a transdisciplinary approach. These actions materialize in research papers, courses, articles, conferences, consultancy, books, or various specific products.

CCS has established its own structures to promote the complexity paradigm and its implementation in the socio-economic domain. These structures have evolved into true “interface” networks, operating in an informal atmosphere to disseminate information used in designing the architecture of the knowledge society.

At least three such structures stand out: the “Atlantykron” Summer Academy, the “Complexity Café,” and the “Nexus” programs, which are implemented at various levels of training.

Over nearly three decades of activity, CCS has contributed to harnessing the country’s intellectual capital, improving the quality of life, and providing knowledge and experiences to various social structures. These structures have been supported in better defining their goals, means, strategies, and programs for solving the problems arising from the torrent of social evolution. Through its entire activity, CCS confirms the truth of a great scientist’s words: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them!”
